About Halong Bay
Halong Bay is found in northeast Hanoi and is approximately 3.5 hours from the city. Developed infrastructure and convenient modes of transport make it effortless to get to Halong Bay.
Halong Bay is made up of islets and grottos, which are connected by a 120km coastline and emerald hued waters. The section recognized by UNESCO as a World Natural Heritage Site is flanked by Cống Tây Island to the east, Ba Hầm Lake to the south, and Đầu Gỗ Island to the west. A majority of junk cruises will take you to this area while going to well-known spots such as Ti Top Island, Surprise Cave, Bai Tu Long Bay, and surrounding floating villages.
The most common way to get to the Bay is via road, with the capital city of Hanoi as the popular point of entry. Currently, there has yet to be a train line that connects the Bay with Hanoi. Visitors can also avail of the helicopter service, which allows visitors to get to Ha Long in less than 2 hours. Some of the well-known cruise ships also sail from the north to the nearby port but visitors still need to transfer to a smaller junk to get to the Bay’s famous spots.

Halong Bay is warm and wet with two seasons, cool and dry winter and a damp summer because of its situation in the tropical zone. The average temperature in Ha Long is approximately around 15⁰C-25⁰C with June to August as the hottest months. However the heat is reduced because of the cool breeze flowing through the bay. During winter, it can get really cold, especially if you are from a tropical country. Make sure to pack a hat and sunscreen for summer holidays and a jacket for winter getaways.

If you are considering weather as a determining factor for your holiday, the months of September to November and March to May are the perfect times to visit Halong Bay. The pleasant temperature and dry weather lets you enjoy all of the activities offered on a cruise while making sightseeing as ideal as it can be.
If you are on a tight budget, the best time to visit is in the months of May and September. These months are considered low season with many cruise liners offering big discounts on cabins. Save up to 40% on a junk cruise trip compared to any other time of the year. However, during July to August, visitors may experience sporadic storms and hurricanes which can lead to delays or trip cancellations. In such cases, you can change your itinerary and head to another destination north of Halong and plan a visit to the Bay at a later date. Storms usually last around 3 days.
If you do not have the time, rest assured that you will have a good time during your trip at any time of the year. Rain in Ha Long Bay does not last long and the area is often bathed in sunlight. During warmer months, enjoy swimming and during cooler months you will get to enjoy the Bay even more.
